One person was killed and 26 others went missing on Friday when a Bangladeshi fishing trawler capsized allegedly after it was hit by a ship in the Bay of Bengal.

Two persons were pulled out of the waters by Bangladesh Navy 30 nautical miles south—west of St Martin’s Island.

Lt Commander Fazlul Karim of the Coast Guard said at least 29 people and fishermen were aboard ‘FB Bandhan’ that drowned at Point 11 of the Bay of Bengal early on Friday.

Bengal Fisheries, which owned the trawler, said it was hit by ship Basundhara—4 while it was on its way to Singapore, bdnews24 online reported.

According to an official of the Saint Martin’s Coast Guard station, navy ship BN Samudrajoy headed for rescue at the site after the station was informed of the mishap.

A search for the missing persons is underway.
