About 40 people are missing in Bangladesh after a bus packed with passengers lost control and plunged into a river near the national capital Dhaka on Sunday, officials said.

Around 50 passengers were on board the ill-fated bus which lost control as it approached a bridge and plunged into the Turag river at Amin Bazar area, near Dhaka, they said. Authorities called out the army while navy divers joined the rescue campaign to find out the missing persons.

“The rescuers are trying to locate the bus under the deep water of the Turag River,” officer-in-charge of suburban Savar told PTI. He said no casualty was reported yet as most passengers were feared to be trapped inside the sunken bus but the television channels quoting witnesses said some bodies were found floating on the water after the accident this morning.

They said only seven to eight passengers could swim ashore as the bus sank in the river which was filled with waters after the past several days of heavy downpour and onrush of waters from upstream regions.
