‘Government taking all appropriate steps to curb violence'
Asserting that the Australian government was taking all appropriate steps to curb violence against Indian students, Trade Minister Simon Crean on Monday said his country was not racist.
“We welcome the Indian students who come in huge numbers. We are offering quality education,” he told journalists on the sidelines of a seminar on ‘Strengthening India-Australia Trade Relations' organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry here.
Mr. Crean said violence was present in all countries, adding it got mitigated when appropriate steps were taken. “The government has added additional police at the places where these incidents are occurring and is also offering helplines and assistance to students on the campuses and online.”

There are no Asian Politicians.. people there want to treat Asians as slaves..
No western country gives PR so easily as Australia does. Frankly speaking Australia has too much to offer, much more than the UK. Example if you live 2 years in OZ you are eligible of PR and subsequently you can even apply for Australian Passport. That means what ever the social benefits OZ provides now and in future you are eligible to get those benefits that is huge plus especially if your age is above 60. Say me which country in 2010 still have such a great policy
J Gosh is not right in his statement. The Australian Government pays fees for any Australian resident or citizen to study in the form of loan called HECS. He has to repay the loan after he completes the study and gets a job. He starts paying only when his income exceeds $45,000 per year. I studied law at the age of 62 (not possible in India). Govt paid my fees and I owe the govt $55.000. Because I use my degree to help people I never get more than $45,000 and so do not have to pay back. I am retiring soon at 70, which means the loan is never repaid. Which country gives that? Australians are not jealous of Indians because they are in the university. However they are cheesed off when many Indians including Australian Indians excel in their study.
Mr.Crean: The whole world is watching how grave the situation is in Australia. The prime minister and you as minister of trade should take the responsibilty of protecting the students by any means. Here are the reasons why:
You know very well that a huge revenue is earned by the colleges and universities as tution fees from students coming from India. Just calcualte the loss when they stop going over there. Most of the universities and colleges will go bankrupt.
Most Australians don't have money to send there kids for higher education so when these Australian kids see the Indians going for higher studies they get jealous and violent. Mr. Crean please come out with policies to educate these uneducated Australian kids and come up with plans to take them for rehab or provide education.
Your college and university reps go to India for attracting Indian students, imagine they being attacked, will you like it, ofcourse not, so same here.
I congratulate Mr.Amitabh Bachchan for refusing a honorary doctorate degree offer from Queensland Institute of Technolgy. More Indians should join in silent protest against these inhuman acts.
I remember that once our Surti, the excellent close-in fielder we had decades back, who settled down in Australia, complained of racism there. It seems racism still persists there, reading from the horrible reports emanating through media. However, when I visited Gold Coast some years back, even shopkeepers there paid encomiums on our Sachin, Dravid and Laxman for their batting prowess. Now, let's leave aside Australia. How come even within india, whenever convenient, people play the Dalit card when all else fails. When would we ever provide special privileges to people purely based on poverty, irrespective of whatever their caste, creed, religion, etc.?
Dear Mr Crean. Please stop denying that there is no racism in Australia. Please do visit and sympathise with the recent victims of racism in Australia.
Australia as a country, may be not racist. People are for sure. The police itself is not taking any interest in making arrests. Australian youth is spoiling the image of the country. I hope all the readers agree to this.
Mr. Crean: If appropriate steps had been taken to curb the violence the incidents might have reduced. Prove to the world that Australia is not racist. Then we might believe you.
What the heck is the Indian govt. doing about this situation. Does our govt. have no backbone or self-respect? It's time that Dr. Singh gives the Aussies a very strong reply.
People don't go to countries where you are not treated as humans. Show some restraint and self-respect.
Who is kidding who? The Australians are totally racists. Take that to the bank!!!!
Yeah right. Aussies and white people in general were racist when they had a choice. Now, as this choice gets more constrained and the racism takes on a more militant and hateful edge, the claims of neutrality get more strident.
Statements, like the one made by Crean, are not promises of action nor even pledges of moral support. They are not meant to convince anyone. These are just mindless media soundbites.
AUSTRALIA IS A GOOD FRIEND OF INDIA FOR THE LONG TERM.NOT ALL INDIAN STUDENTS FROM INDIA GET INTO TROUBLE. INDIAN STUDENTS SHOULD BE BRIEFED ON HOW TO STAY OUT OF TROUBLE BEFORE THEY LEAVE. STUDENTS SHOULD ALSO STICK TO WHAT THEY GO FOR-SERIOUS STUDIES.
