Australian officials say they are providing WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange with consular assistance following his arrest in London.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says the Australian Consul General in London spoke to Mr. Assange on Tuesday after he was arrested to ensure he had legal representation.
Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd said in an interview with Australia’s Channel 7 on Wednesday that Australia would support Mr. Assange as it would any Australian arrested abroad.
A British judge denied Mr. Assange bail after the Wikileaks founder vowed to fight efforts to be extradited to Sweden in a sex-crimes investigation.
