German luxury carmaker and Volkswagen subsidiary Audi issued a voluntary recall of up to 850,000 diesel vehicles on Friday, saying it would help reduce engine emissions.

Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche vehicles with affected engines in Europe and other markets outside North America will receive a free software upgrade “that improves emissions behaviour in real driving conditions further beyond existing legal requirements,” the company said in a statement.
