A rescue official says that at least 20 students were killed in an attack outside a school campus in Nigeria’s troubled northeast.

The official says that some of the victims were shot and others had been killed with knives in an attack late Monday and into the early morning Tuesday near the Federal Polytechnic Mubi in the town of Mubi. The official asked not to be named because he was not yet authorised to give the figure to the press.

Danjuma Aiso, a student, says the attackers targeted students who, like him, live in rented accommodations outside the campus. He says the attack occurred late Monday and early Tuesday.

The attack follows the killing Saturday of three students outside a university campus in the nearby city of Maiduguri.
