Three Indian nationals in their twenties have been charged with the attempted murder of Praveen Reddy, the 26-year-old university student from Hyderabad, who was stabbed on Friday and is battling for his life in a London hospital.
Identified as Mareshwar Arava ( 25) , Sai Kishore Balguri ( 25) and Nishanth Puttapaka (23) all three were arrested from the same East London address where Praveen lived-- and where police believe he was stabbed.
They will be produced in a magistrates’ court on Monday. Police sources sought to highlight their nationality to scotch speculation in the Indian media that Praveen was a victim of a racist attack.
"We are not treating the attack as racially motivated,’’ repeated a Scotland spokesman.
The three are among the 11 people arrested at the weekend. Seven were later released on bail and one ``without further action’’, police said.
Praveen remained in a critical condition.
Son of a Hyderabad businessman, Sudhakar Reddy, Praveen was studying for an MBA at the London Business School and lived in Plaistow, a suburb in the East London borough of Newham. He was found stabbed outside the apartment which he reportedly shared with a group of other fellow Indians.
Police learned of the incident when they were called to Newham General Hospital on Friday morning where Praveen had been admitted with stab wounds. Police said investigations were continuing but declined to give details.

It is quite visible in North America that some North Indians are racist against the South Indians and jealous about the South Indians' academic and professional achievements. Although both are Indians, they never mix together.

From where did you get this information that all 3 who have been charged are - 1. North Indians, 2. They have been confirmed to be committing the act? and 3. What is the motive behind this act.? Without knowing all this information, kindly do not post such kind of hypothetical thoughts. This will not only worsen the situation within India, it will send a very bad signal to all the foreigners.

There is a dignity in the discussions in this newspaper's columns and it should not be let go liberal like TOI, rediff where sensationalising comments about region/religion/caste/language are displayed just for the sake of number of hits. I've been to many countries and I never found any mentionable the 'racist' attitude of my own compatriots against each other.
@Shiva: The reason South Indian never mix with North Indian is the language in which South Indian speaks. Two South Indian and you will see familiar sound bite coming out. If there are three Indian (two south and one north, you will hardly find them talking in common language)

I was born in the south, grew up in the north, studied in the west and worked in the east, so I understand regional differences in India very well. Discussion about these regional differences is inappropriate in this situation and unncessarily inflammatory.
We cannot speak about racism in countries outside India. Amongst Indians studying in Indian universities there is a North South divide, there is a division based on region, language,cast etc. When we cannot rectify our own follies why talk of such maladies in U.S, UK, or other countries where Indian students take admission to study?The deep social illness has to be rectified in our country &specially so the students going abroad who have to maintain a code of conduct worthy of the soil they belong to.Many f them fail to learn about the ways to maintain a dignified way of life and a peaceful coexistence with the place & the native people they have to live, study & work later.If the govt fails to take measures to impart the skills necessary to live abroad amicably with the locals, these incidents will continue.
the language is a big factor i did study in the south but my friends are from south who still are in contact with me please do not say things like this

I agree with digvijay singh if north indians are killing south indians then that it is different story this incident happened while partying. Envy, jealous, greed we humans all have we cannot hide it. It is shame bringing this as south and north indian issue. But south india has different culture and north has different culture they both are awesome and has drawbacks too.
Its very unfortunate and shocking but not surprise. I had bad experience living with Indians in USA. We Indians have too much of drink party, talk or fight against telangana issue/Tamil vs Telgu arguments or south vs North Indian versions and we lose focus what for we are here at foreign land? Indians carry crab mentality where ever we go on this earth apart from caste, corruption and creed. Of coruse its premature to comment for any one without knowing the facts about this incident in London. I do not understand why folks are rallying against @Shiva. He made an observation. Stifling him is mob mindset. He is not going to incite a war between South vs North. As humans, we tend to see the world through our experiences. His observation may have been like that. To add to his experience, it can be ALSO observed people hang out with the same type of people - where language is an easier link. Quite honestly, I have observed even in meetings with Angresi folks) they switch over to Hindi, Gujarathi (most) AND have been reprimanded. That is natural, IMHO. They have to outgrow that. English on any day, is a foreign language and Indians do have an accent issue and it is very difficult to follow them (even fellow Indian-Americans say that). Such congregation - Malyalee with Malyalee, Tamil with Tamil, Telugu with Telugu does create the impression of discrimination. It may not be intentional.
Please do publish racially motivated editorial mail. In this case from name, all appear to be South Indians. Also, better learn the current spoken language of India, that way all prejudiced divides vanish.

Before the facts were known, all 'desis' were quick to accuse whites of racism in the attack.
The best thing would be, to deport the defaulters back to India,so as to be tried in a court of law. The Indians who have gone abroad for earning a livelihood should realize that they are sons of the Bharatmatha and show some affection, consideration and tolerance towards one another. Even at the slightest sign of intolerance, they should be shown the way out, from the country where they have migrated with work permit or student visa !
We Indians are too quick to point our fingers at racism, when a crime is committed against an Indian by a white but keep mum when such hate crimes based on caste/language/region/religion are committed against fellow Indians by other Indians. This crime may be just due to personal issues but Indians should try to get rid of our prejudices against each other based on caste/language/region and religion.

Relax guys, do not get too emotional and judgmental take it easy and focus on your own lives and families, do not waste your energies on this kind of things, there is nothing much we an do here (this was destined to happen and happened), we have bigger problems in India at higher level to be focused and resolved, this is part and parcel of the daily life in this Kalli-Yuga. If we all understand the basic fundamentals of life and what it means to us and people around us, this would never happen. I hope we all grow wiser together. There is a share of our elders in this and I blame them first. Why is one injured person in another country getting so much attention? Many people are killed in crimes in India every day. Do they not matter? Is this becoming a country where the affluent are the only people who matter? What percentage of time is someone convicted for the murders of Indians in India? This is very much true. You come to Auckland. You can see how all these happenings. Some times I wonder whether I am living in a pre-independence India outside India. Name any kind of difference or fight or racist attack you can see it in Auckland. Be it south or North India. This is not to blame any one in particular. we need to realise and pass on our values to our next generations.
In foreign land it is very hard to see United Indians even in Worship places. Patriotism needs to be taught from childhood onwards through parents not only in School. As an Indian living overseas for more than 15 years, I see foreigners are more friendlier than fellow Indians unless they are from same language speaking state. But I am wondering about the other countries people's unity in Foreign soil. Indians start forming associations State wise. It is very hard to see an Indian Association consist all language speaking Indians.
Yes, there is plenty of racism in the U.S., and if you are from Tamil Nadu and cannot speak in Hindi you are ridiculed, questioned how can you forget Hindi? This happens to me all the time. When I say unless I know a language, how can I forget; then they get annoyed; and they think they are the son's of the soil (India). Most of the convenient stores and gas stations are owned by North Indians. This applies to educated north Indians also The moment I know that it is an Indian's shop, I shy away and go to any Tom, Dick, and Harry's shop...I never visit an Indian shop.Please accept the reality. Why can't they speak in English and why compel to speak in Hindi.

Mr. Shiva hit the bulls eye. North Indians definitely are rude and ill mannered when it comes to language and regionalism. I live and work in USA and seen that guys switch to hindi even if non hindi speaking people are around. This happens even during official meetings. When I objected several times they asked me to learn hindi as it is a national language.

The victim, I believe, is in the hands of the best group of Doctors; let's pray for his speedy recovery. When Indians learn to respect other Indians without caste creed religion or state divide then they will get any moral authority to criticize others. Indians in the west have Tamil Kanna sindi punjabi andhra bengali etd sangha. even when they go outside their country they still keep to these divisions and only invite their group to their homes. Only Indians living in coutnry side do not normally have these attitudes perhaps due to necesssity or due to being a smaller group. They impart their western born kids in these ideas although luckily for these kids they don't seem to take notice. Indian students coming from India these days are rude arrogant and drink and behave like thugs bullying and misbehaving in western countries. Since they do not have theri parents with them most of them have no control. Go look at sydney melbourne la and you will see Indian students acting like cheap drunks. It is high time parents in India instead of buys seats and marks also bought some manners for kids.

Hi, as everybody has commented, I would like to let Mr. Shiva know that we are also a part of North American Indian student body and there is no specific problem between the south and north Indians. Everybody helps each other in the hour of need and there is no casteism present. I don't know why people make an issue out of this north and south thing. We are united and we should be united. Friends are family when you are out of your country. I really don't think there is any problem between the two communities. Try and avoid to comment like this in the future, it just adds up to the misunderstanding created by people. I would like to apologize for any rude comment but I seriously think that at least we Indians, should not start fighting amongst our selves. This will not help us in any way.

Comment by a fellow Indian about the North South divide is lame to extent, that such people should be Outcast from holy land India. The very essence that some one from that part of the country can write such things, goes to show the myopic vision of people from that region.
With respect to this news. Please do not make your own stories guys. The reason could be anything. All the people involved are from the same place (Andhra). so this doesn't have any roots with the North-South division. May be because of money or business related issues. I live in overseas. I feel most of the Indians always carry their sh** from home (caste, language, corruption, etc.). I have seen it so much so that i am overwhelmed. Its amazing to see people advertising their language or their state quite often but have no clue of what as a whole the country has to offer (how many of these indians know who the vice president is? what is NDA or UPA?). I've seen people who watch those chainsawish megaserials and cry here in Australia. I've always wondered how the sixth sense of us has always kept inhibited by some sort of crap. The first cause for any indian having a problem with something is money. That is the sole reason why they leave india.
Amazing how this has turned out into an unconnected topic forum. The reason for this attack needs to be thoroughly examined after it is determined. I am glad the authorities are not afraid to expose the nationality and the nativity of the culprits if only to dispel myths about this sort of attacks always being racist in nature. Clearly there is more to it than meets the eye.
The example i have given for watching those soul-less and worthless serials was a professional (a researcher!). There is no problem with you guys watching silly stuff (like bollywood) but make sure you spend sometime in knowing more about your country or yourself. As an educated beings it must be inculcated in us to learn and spread the culture we have. I have met an indian professional from North who once told me that her lone destination to south india was Mumbai!!! this is why i've typed such long comment. People in India plz do realise that we all are a part of one organization (a democracy). so respect everyone and learn about other cultures too. I am amazed at our ability to throw in caste excuse even in this situation. Although, going by the names of the accused, it appears to >be a dispute-at-home, i.e., South India, we were so quick to blame the North Indians, most of whom wouldn't ever know about this incident. I would not get into listing down the qualities of North Indians, and how there isn't really anything about South India that makes them jealous. Please get over the regional divides and think like an Indian. Embrace the country with its diversity. Be responsible citizens. For once, let us leave the caste politics to the politicians.
