Australia's second cyclone in two weeks is knocking down trees and power lines in the main northern city of Darwin.
Cyclone Carlos dumped heavy rain and sent wind gusts up to 80 mph (130 kph) through the city as the storm passed nearby on Wednesday. Schools, the airport and government buildings were closed.
The storm passed as close as two miles (three kilometers) to the city but stayed offshore. The Bureau of Meteorology says it could circle back towards the city on Thursday.
The storm is far less powerful than Cyclone Yasi that devastated several towns in the northeast state of Queensland two weeks ago. Queensland was already suffering from flooding since late last year that destroyed 35,000 homes and caused billions in damage.
