The government has issued an advisory for workers emigrating to Malaysia following reports of a large number of Indians being stranded or taken into custody there.
Asking workers not to leave the country without proper documentation, the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) has also informed workers that strikes were considered illegal in that country.
Drawing attention to guidelines drawn up by the Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur (www.mohr.gov.my), the Ministry advised Indian workers planning to take up legal employment in Malaysia to get themselves familiarised with the laws and working conditions in the country.
Guidelines
In particular, they should immediately obtain a resident permit or identity card and a labour card, not part with their travel documents and employment contract, carry a copy of the passport at all times and not sign another employment contract during their stay in Malaysia.
They should note that strike by workers is an illegal act under Malaysian law, a MOIA news release added.
