Radical preacher Abu Qatada — Osama bin Laden’s “right-hand man” in Europe — has lost his appeal against detention pending deportation to Jordan, where he faces terror charges.
Two High Court judges on Tuesday ruled that they were satisfied his detention was justified in view of the security risk he posed. Managing the risk during the Olympic Games would be “exceptionally problematic” , they said.
Qatada (51), who was released on bail in February after six years of detention without trial , was rearrested in April as the British government resumed deportation proceedings against him after getting assurances from Jordan that he would get a fair trial.
