United States President-elect Donald Trump attacked actor Meryl Streep on Monday in a series of tweets, calling her “overrated” and a “Hillary flunky who lost big”.

“Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes,” tweeted Mr. Trump.

The tweets came after Ms. Streep used her Golden Globes acceptance speech to launch a scathing attack on Mr. Trump, saying she was heartbroken by his imitation of a disabled reporter during his campaign.

Mr. Trump defended himself from this accusation, saying he never mocked the reporter, but only “showed him” what grovelling was like, He also accused the reporter of changing a 16-year-old story to make Mr. Trump look bad.

“There was one performance this year that stunned me," Ms. Streep said of the incident.

“It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it and I still can't get it out of my head because it wasn't in a movie. It was real life,” she said.
