Pakistan PM pays tribute to Om Puri

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, actors fraternity, Pakistan Hindu Council and people in general have paid rich tributes on Friday to the Bollywood actor OmPuri actor, who passed away in Mumbai, for his efforts for the normalisation of Indo-Pak ties.

All Pakistani news channels flashed the news of OmPuri's death while paying tribute to his acting prowess. #OmPuri remained top trend on Pakistani twitter throughout the day with people outpoured their love for the late actor.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said OmPuri made significant contribution in linking the cultural ties between India and Pakistan." Om Puri refused to succumb to the pressure of anti-peace lobbies," Mr. Sharif said.

Om Puri acted in a Pakistani film ‘Actor In Law’, which was released late last year. The late actor played the role of Pakistani in several Bollywood and international movies, ranging from Pakistani dictator Zia ul Haq in Charlie Wilson's ‘War’ to Maulana Sahib in the Bollywood movie Bajrangi Bhaijan. The actor regularly participated in Pakistan film festivals. "The legendary actor also played a leading role in a Pakistani film, Actor In Law," acknowledged, Ramesh Vankwani, Pakistan Hindu Council chief .

Pakistani people and actors also expressed grief over Om Puri's death in the social media. #OmPuri remained a top trend in Pakistan whith leading actors Mahira Khan said the world loses a great artist, truly one of Indian cinema's best. Rest in Peace #OmPuri

In a statement issued on Friday Dr. Ramesh Vankwani, expressed extreme grief on the demise of Om Puri. In a condolence statement, Pakistan Hindu Council stated "We acknowledge his positive efforts for the normalisation of Indo-Pak ties were remarkable".

"Om Puri was truly a friend of Pakistan and through his contributions on the cultural front, he had always supported to bring people of both countries closer," Dr. Ramesh Vankwani said, while recalling his visit to Pakistan last year, during which he openly expressed his desire for better Indo-Pak relations to find a practical way to promote peace, cultural and business cooperation. There is special respect for the late actor Om Puri in the hearts of Pakistani people, Dr. Ramesh said.
