An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.4 has struck southeast Turkey but there are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Istanbul—based Kandilli seismology centre says the tremor occurred at 10-34 a.m. (0734 GMT) on Thursday in the province of Elazig. Its epicentre was near the town of Icme.
NTV news channel it was felt in neighbouring regions. But Elazig’s mayor, Suleyman Selmanoglu, told reporters no “problems” were reported in the province.
Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, which is crossed by faultlines. Last year, some 40 people were killed in a magnitude 6 earthquake in Elazig. In 1999, about 18,000 people were killed in two powerful earthquakes that struck the country’s northwest.
