Suicide bombers on Monday struck a judicial complex in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar and a crowded commercial hub in Lahore, killing 44 people and injuring over 150 others.
Thirty four people, including women and children, were killed and over 100 injured when two suicide bombers blew themselves up at Moon Market in Allama Iqbal Town area of Lahore shortly after 8. 45 pm.
The heads of the two bombers had been found at the site, Special Superintendent of Police Shafiq Ahmad Gujjar told PTI.
Three women and two children, including a two-year-old boy, were among the dead.
Lahore Commissioner Khusro Pervaiz said the death toll could rise.
Earlier in the day, a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a busy court complex in Peshawar, killing 10 people and injuring nearly 50 others.
The attacker detonated his explosives when he was challenged by policemen guarding the complex.
The court complex is located a short distance from several sensitive installations, including a hostel for provincial legislators and Governor’s House.
No group claimed responsibility for the attacks in Peshawar and Lahore.
In Lahore, one explosion occurred within the market while the other occurred on its outer perimeter. The blasts went off within a minute of each other near a bank and a police station.
During operations in the restive Swat valley and Waziristan tribal region, Pakistani troops killed four militants and apprehended 17 others with links to the terrorists, authorities said.
Security forces gunned down four militants during a search operation at Goraghat in Swat, which has witnessed a spurt in violence in the past two weeks.
The army had said it had cleared most parts of the northwestern valley, located 160 km from Islamabad, of the Taliban nearly two months ago.
