Officials say Pakistani security forces have killed at least 30 militants after coming under attack in a troubled tribal region in the northwest.

Two government and security officials said on Thursday one of their soldiers also died and four were wounded in the overnight gunbattle in Chamarkand area of the Mohmand region near the Afghan border.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to media on the record.

The attack happened not far from the Bajur region where the military this week announced it had cleared the one-time the militant stronghold after a successful operation.
