The mayor of a town outside Brussels says 20 people have been killed in the head-on crash of two commuter trains at rush hour.

Dirk Pieters, the mayor of Buizingen, says “the most recent information we have is that 20 people died.”

He said he had received the reports from emergency officials on the scene southwest of Brussels.

The trains collided in snowy conditions in the commuter town around 8:30 a.m. (0730GMT) on Monday.

Kristien Berckmans, a Belgian railways spokeswoman, says “there was considerable damage and several people were injured.”

There was no immediate word on the cause of the crash.
