State media say a tunnel under construction in south-western China has collapsed, trapping 19 workers.

The official Xinhua News Agency says the workers from a road construction crew in Shangrila county in Yunnan province were buried when unstable geological conditions caused the tunnel they were digging to collapse on Tuesday.

It says rescue workers managed to dig a 65—foot (20—meter) —long emergency evacuation passage by Wednesday afternoon in an attempt to reach the trapped men.

Xinhua says monitoring equipment showed there are still signs of life inside the collapsed tunnel, and rescue workers are trying to send in water, oxygen and electricity supplies.
