Many have this perception that LAW is a tool for taking revenge, in fact it is tool for corrections, that is why Prisons are called as Correctional Facility and Judiciary and Law comes under Department of Justice and not Revenge. The pian inflicted by the punishment upon the criminal(s) should be equal to or lesser than the pain inflicted by the crime upon the victim(s) then only we can call a society to be civlilizing or civil. But if one says there can be crimes but no punishments then that society would be called as Barbaric and those who live in that system as Barbarians. In this although I am against Death Penalty we still cannot call Singapore to be barbaric well he taken a man's life so they have given punishment which is EQUAL which is DEATH PENALTY-so Singapore although is not a CIVILISED NATION but it is a CIVILIZING NATION.
@Sairam VN-If you actually do learn about our judiciary system when compared to most parts of the world we are not as bad as we are poratryed to be. Yes there is corruption, inefficancy, political inteference etc. But then it is not that in nations like Singapore, United Kingodm, USA to name few where one thinks that they are so great-but yes today they are better than us but once upon a time they were morecorrupt and inefficent than we are today. Population and size of a nation does play a great role-it is unrealistic to compare the whole of India with a city state like Singapore. If you take a Prison like Puzhal in Chennai itself I consider it some kind of revolutoin in Crime & Punishment which shows we have a better understaning of what is Law than most other nations actually do.
The Laws in India and Singapore are primarily based on British System. While in Singapore trials are expedited, judgements delivered in time and executed there by fulfilling the objectives of the judicial system, it does not happen in India.Effective judiciary ensures crimes are truly deterred and criminals transformed. Arguing the size of the two countries is irrelevant. Apathy, incompetence etc of the judiciary and effectiveness of corruption are the factors for the sorry state of affairs. I pray everyone in the judicial system does a soul search and contribute his mite for speedy judgments.Otherwise commoner would lose faith in the judicial system
Eight days is certainly too short period for sentencing the accused to death. But when the accused confesses and the sentence is mandatory death where is the confusion. Indian courts are jammed with older cases and certainly it takes longer period. We should follow Singapore and try to close all cases in less than 3 years.
One cannot compare a City State like Singapore with a nation like India.
Singapore 710 km2 (189th) 274 sq mi Pop: 5,183,700 (of whom 3,257,000 are Singapore citizens)
India: 3,287,263 km2 [A](7th)1,269,219 sq mi Pop: 1,210,193,422. India is 4632 times bigger than Singapore and 233 times more populated than Singapore. Perhaps it is possible for Chennai alone to become like Singapore soon as the only City where Law & Order is good compared to all other cities in India.
World should learn from Singapore about the speedy trial system. That is why in Singapore the crime rate is low
Please note the efficiency of investigations and justice. Swiftness and accuracy in these matters sends the right message to society. In India people are used to slow procedures and everything drags for 10 years or more, and no wonder that so many flout the law ! Every Indian going to Singapore should become keenly aware of this.
Singapore now shown to the world that they have a good judiciary. What a speedy trail!
Of late murder and suicides are reported from different parts of the world and from the construction industry in particular. While this relatively unorganized sector accounts for the majority of the work force, lion share being skilled or semi skilled, the need for mentors and counselors are yet to be recognized. While most of the companies do have an army of professionals like engineers the need for a counselor is quite visible from their absence- no matter how big the organizations are. Once we analyze the root cause of such cases we will come to know that it happens because the workers being in an alien nation suppress their problems with in themselves and fails to share even with their close associates. The need for a counselor need to be incorporated in the bidding stage of tender itself. This post must be made mandatory for organizations where the total work force exceed certain limit. Such a move can avert crimes and can improve productivity of the existing workforce. The idea is to create an avenue for venting the pangs of workers after his hard labour.
Murder committed on 8 February 2012; death sentence passed 6 days later AFTER trial. What more deterrant can there be for anyone to commit heinous crimes? When will India see such efficiency - 500 or 1,000 years later? Imagine the statistics for murder and rape in India if we were to implement such timelines for punishment and ensure the punishment is carried out without fail. But when those wielding real power are the criminals in the guise of politicians and bureaucrats, what hope does the country have?
Am i reading it correctly? Feb 8th murder was commited and Feb 14th Death penatlity awarded. Six days for the giving a judgement?
