As the Centre battles the political fallout on the Telangana issue, Union Home Secretary G. K. Pillai on Friday said Hyderabad will be the capital of the newly proposed State to be culled out of Andhra Pradesh.

“Hyderabad, I think, will always be the capital of Telangana,” Mr. Pillai, who is here on an overnight visit to the State, told reporters after a security review meeting.

The remarks of Mr. Pillai assume significance as the political backlash in Andhra Pradesh mounted with more MLAs resigning to protest the Centre’s agreeing to the carving out of a separate Telangana State.

Mr. Pillai also said the agitation against Telangana would die down in the coming days once the people understand the real implication of what is meant.

“I’m sure that in the coming days, as people understand the real implication of what is meant, I think the agitation would die down and the process for formation of the new State would continue,” he said.

Earlier, Mr. Pillai reviewed the security situation in the State.
