As public outrage mounted over the molestation case involving the former Haryana Director-General of Police, S.P.S. Rathore, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Saturday favoured “revisiting” the entire case.
The Union Home Ministry has issued a show-cause notice to the retired senior police officer, asking him why his police medal should not be taken away and pension reduced for allegedly abusing power.
“After examining the case, I think it should be revisited,” Mr. Hooda told reporters at his residence here.
“Whatever steps the Haryana government has to take after legal consultations, we will take.” He pointed out that Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily had given an assurance that he would examine the case again.
Expressing sympathy with the victim’s family, the Chief Minister said it would be given adequate security. Union Home Secretary G.K. Pillai said the Centre had started the process of withdrawing the police medal given to Mr. Rathore in 1985.
Mr. Rathore was sentenced to six-month imprisonment for molesting the 14-year-old girl 19 years ago. The victim committed suicide in 1993 following the harassment her family faced after she lodged a complaint against Mr. Rathore.
