To overcome the shortage of qualified doctors, the Central government has increased the ceiling on MBBS seats in a government medical college from 150 to 250, provided the hospital has a bed capacity of 1,000 or more.
The increase in the ceiling will come into effect in the 2011-12 academic session. “But the raise in the ceiling is not automatic; it is subject to verification of infrastructure and human resource,” Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad told TheHindu.
Thanks to the decision, the intake in the 37 government medical colleges across the country will go up by 3,700 seats a year. The private sector colleges can increase the intake in the next academic session.
Mr. Azad said the Ministry was awaiting the response of the corporate sector to its proposal of corporate houses opening medical colleges. If corporate houses, including big hospitals, showed interest in opening medical colleges, the number of seats at the entry point would go up. The response would be known in August when applications were due for grant of permission to set up colleges or enhance the number of seats.
“I will also be writing to the State governments to enhance the retirement age of the faculty in medical colleges to overcome the shortage of teachers. The retirement age in the Central government institutions has already been raised to 65 years, while in a majority of the States the limit is 58 years. In Kerala, it is the lowest, at 55 years,” Mr. Azad said.
Besides rolling out a plan for adding 10,000 postgraduate seats in phases, the Ministry has relaxed the norms for the medical colleges to apply for postgraduate seats. The colleges can now apply for postgraduate courses in the third year of their existence. Earlier, they could apply only after five years. Of the 10,000 postgraduate seats, 4,000 were added, while the rest would be created in the coming years.
High on the Ministry's agenda is the setting up of one national and eight regional institutes of paramedical sciences. The institutes would cost close to Rs. 1,000 crore and turn out 10,000 more paramedical staff every year.

It was quite surprise to me and my parents to hear that the number of seats in MBBS has been increased. It was a good opportunity for an ordinary student to get the medicine seat.I am applying to EAMCET this year.
I am happy that the number of seats in MBBS has been increased.
I had appeared Joint Entrance from Tripura and I am sure that I will be able to read MBBS but I want to read in RIMS(Regional Institute of Medical Science,Manipur). My ranking is such that I am having 50% chances to be able to read in RIMS.So my request is Such that since the no of seats have been increased, the Govt. shold implement this from this academic session only2010-2011.Me like candidates can enjoy the oppurtunity. Please do something and i want a quick answer and please email me as fast as possible.Good bye
I appreciate the decision of govt. for increasing the number of seats for MBBS, but there is a need for great change in the way of treatment of patients.
May be seats can be increased to 200 in 10 or 15 colleges this year itself - if they meet norms. Is it possible? Ministry should consider
Increase of medical seats is very essential both for the aspirants as well as for the country as we have acute shortage of doctors but delaying it by one year is not understood. When the necessity is felt ,it can be done this year itself. Why should we put the future of 1000s of students at stake? Karnataka givt today has announced increase of 413 MBBS seats in Govt medical colleges - why can't other state govt. also do the same? In West Bengal, here is acute shortage of MBBS seats which forces the students to go outside the state to undertake this course and most of them do not come back to the state -the impact of this is felt by the general public of West Bengal -when they had to run to Bangalore and Chennai for treatment. Can the ministers and those in power be little more active -think outside the election politics and concentrate on the interest of public ? Sincere request to all of them -pls do not put the future of students at stake -that is neither good gfor your electoral politics neither for the state nor for the nation . Later lament on the brain-drain won;t help . Pls, pls pls, don't make the student suffer - spoil thier career - atlest once stand up and show that you care for those who elected you to the power. The Central Government has decided to increase the ceiling on M.B.B.S Seats in a Government Medical College having a bed capacity of 1000 or more subject to verification of infrastructure and human resource. This is good news for those poor students from villages, who can not get admission in a self-finance medical college or in a medical college under a deemed university by paying donation and capitation fees in lakhs. It would be very helpful if the government implement this scheme from 2010-2011 academic year onwards, in government colleges which are ready for this purpose satisfying all requirements.
Thanking you.

Vriddhachalam.
It is the welcome news for poor students but it is requested the ministry to implement the ceiling of seats from 150 to 250 in colleges having facilities from this academic year that is 2010-2011 onwards though facilities are already available.
increase in medical seat to 250 is a good news for all medical aspirants. But ,with necessary efforts it can be implemented this academic year itself.in kerala ,the hike in fee in a few years is shocking as it is the highest in india. The decision for deposit of 5 lack in management seat worsened the situation.if the increase in seat is implemented ,it will be of great benefit to those in merit list.In tamil nadu and other states the no: of medical merit seat is many times of that in kerala. The 1 month gap until july 15 is enough for setting issues regarding this increase in gvmt medical colleges.
Increase in ceiling of MBBS seats in govt medical colleges from 150 to 250 if the hospital has bed capacity of 1000 or more is a welcome news for medical aspirants especially for poor students from villages who cant afford lakhs of rupees as college fees in self-financing colleges. But why postponing this to next academic year(2011-2012).We have nearly one month remaining until july 15 for granting permission, renewal and other issues regarding govt. medical colleges. It is the wish of poor students and parents to implement the ceiling of seats from 150 to 250 in colleges having facilities from this academic year(2010-2011) onwards.
