GoM must come out with details: BJP

The BJP on Monday welcomed the setting up of a Group of Ministers (GoM) on the Bhopal gas tragedy, but demanded that the GoM also establish the truth behind the safe passage of then Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson.

Party spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said the GoM must also tell the country about the way Mr. Anderson was allowed to escape the law. If law and order was an issue in Bhopal and the reason for sending Mr. Anderson out of the city, as Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has claimed, then what prevented the Rajiv Gandhi government to hold him anywhere else in the country. “India is a big country, he could have been kept anywhere,” Mr. Rudy said.

It was also clear Mr. Anderson could not have been allowed to fly away safely to the United States without the knowledge and permission of the then Prime Minister, who was also holding the portfolio of External Affairs, Mr. Rudy added.
