Fringe groups protest in Chennai over Cauvery

Following a boycott call by several political parties and fringe groups over the Cauvery water dispute, there was chaos in parts of Chennai on the day of the city's first IPL match of the season. Police had tightened security around the stadium in Chepauk and fringe groups like Tamizhaga Ezhuchi Iyakkam and Tamizhaga Vaazhvurimai Katchi  took to the streets. Several were arrested.

Happy Cities Summit at Mangalagiri

Around 1,000 delegates from India and abroad are expected to take part in the ‘Happy Cities Summit-Amaravati 2018’ beginning at CK Convention Centre near the DGP office at Tadepalli.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed the AP Capital Region Development Authority (AP CRDA) to make the prestigious Happy Cities Summit Amaravati - 2018 being organised from April 10 to 12 a grand success and showcase Andhra Pradesh’s strength to the world.

Protesting against the alleged dilution of the SC/ST Act, various Dalit organisations  protested in Coimbatore on Tuesday.

However, despite the 20% population comprising Dalits and the Scheduled Tribes (STs), Tamil Nadu witnessed only a subdued response from political parties and civil society groups to the Supreme Court’s recent verdict on the law governing atrocities against Scheduled Castes/STs.

This in contrast to the situation in the northern States where violent agitations broke out over the issue, as the court issued a host of guidelines to protect public servants and private employees from arbitrary arrests under the SC/STs (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Malaysia will hold a general election on May 9, the Election Commission (EC) said on Tuesday, in what could be the toughest test of the ruling-coalition's 61-year grip on power.

Embattled Prime Minister Najib Razak is under pressure to deliver an emphatic win for the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, as he struggles to appease Malaysians unhappy with rising costs and a multi-billion dollar scandal at a state fund he founded.

Tropical cyclone Keni, which has upgraded to a category 3 storm, was approached the island nation of Fiji on Tuesday and authorities have warned the public to make preparations for it.

Keni is expected to be closest to the island state from midday and the weather office is expecting the storm to pass south of Nadi, the third largest city of Fiji, before making landfall over the southern island of Kadavu,
