Alarmed at the MIMs threat to float a third front against the ruling party in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections, the Congress began an exercise to mollify Majlis floor leader in the Assembly Akbaruddin Owaisi.
Mr. Owaisi and two other party members were suspended from the Assembly on Monday after he angrily gestured at Speaker N. Kiran Kumar Reddy seeking permission to raise a supplementary question. Mr. Owaisi walked up to the podium and enacted how the Speaker allegedly insulted him while asking him to sit down.
Fearing that the issue could strain relations between the parties on the eve of the polls to the GHMC, Congress leaders swung into action to pacify the agitated MIM leader. Higher Education Minister D. Sridhar Babu was the first to meet Mr. Owaisi to clarify that the Speakers sharp reaction was not aimed at him.
Deputy Speaker Nadendla Manohar, Government Chief Whip Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and Government Whip Sake Shailajanath went to the MIM legislature party office. During their meeting, they reiterated that Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy bore no ill-will towards him. The MIM leader said he was deeply hurt by the Speakers action.
Mr. Nadendla Manohar said: We told him that in the interests of the smooth functioning of the House he should forget the episode and actively participate in the proceedings.
Earlier, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy told reporters that Mr. Akbaruddin was impulsive by nature. There was no alternative to suspending him from the House, as he repeatedly asked the Chair to take a decision [to remove him], he said and added that the issue would be settled without any problem.
