The average amount of 4-MI found in a 12-ounce can for Coke and Pepsi drinks was nearly five times California’s 29-micrograms-per-day limit
They're arguably the world's two most popular beverages and each accounts for several billion individual servings sold per day. Yet this week the corporate behemoths behind Coca-Cola and Pepsi quietly agreed to comply with a new regulatory requirement in California to either carry a cancer warning label if their products included certain levels of a carcinogenic chemical or reduce those chemical levels significantly. The beverage giants chose to cut down on the chemical.
The action marks a major success for the Centre for Science in the Public Interest, a non-profit watchdog and consumer advocacy group, which has for many months now campaigned vigorously to get the United States Food and Drug Administration to recognise that the compound 4-methylimidazole, also listed as 4-MI or 4-MEI, as a known carcinogen. Last year, the FDA acceded and added 4-MI to its carcinogen list.
This week the CSPI dashed off another letter to the FDA following laboratory experiments that showed that 4-MI and a chemical cousin called 2-MI, both of which Coke and Pepsi use to produce their classic caramel colour, were found to be carcinogenic in animal studies.
Michael Jacobson, Executive Director of CSPI, said in the letter that the FDA “has done nothing in the past year to protect the millions of consumers who have been consuming dangerously contaminated soft drinks and possibly other products with ammoniated caramel colourings”.
To clarify the risks posed by this artificial colouring agent used by Coca-Cola and Pepsi, the CSPI tested a range of ultra-popular drinks in the U.S. including Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Pepsi-Cola, Diet Pepsi, Dr Pepper, Diet Dr Pepper and Whole Foods' 365 Cola. The average amount of 4-MI found in a 12-ounce can for Coke and Pepsi drinks was 138 micrograms, which was nearly five times California's 29-micrograms-per-day limit, “indicating a lifetime cancer risk of five out of 100,000 people,” CSPI said.
Warning that this cancer risk could rise to 13 cancers per 100,000 if only people consuming soft drinks containing caramel colouring were considered, Dr. Jacobson said the Coca-Cola Corporation and PepsiCo had switched to lower-concentration 4-MI formulations due to California's Proposition 65 law based on the State's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. However, Dr. Jacobson noted that the levels of 4-MI may exceed the FDA's one-in-a-million standard even with the new formulation.
In an angry response, the American Beverage Association, an industry body, hit back at the CSPI study saying, “This is nothing more than CSPI scare tactics, and their claims are outrageous. The science simply does not show that 4-MEI, in foods or beverages, is a threat to human health... CSPI fraudulently claims to be operating in the interest of the public's health when it is clear its only motivation is to scare the American people.”
As the ultimate arbiter, the jury still seems to be out at the FDA. Its spokesman, Douglas Karas, was quoted as saying in a statement that the FDA was currently reviewing the CSPI petition, but “it is important to understand that a consumer would have to consume well over a thousand cans of soda a day to reach the doses administered in the studies that have shown links to cancer in rodents”.

I personally detest the taste of these drinks and have not touched it since I don't remember when! As one contributor said why not drink tea in its many and varied forms, which has beneficial properties. India should never had allowed these multinationals entry India, which caused the closure of many harmless, non-carcinogenic and Indian soft drink producers to go under at the cost of numerous jobs. Now that some truth are coming out India should take steps to ban the product and promote indigenous products.

A country will never grow with globalization. These foreign companies
are masters of monopoly. They dont want competition. Recent example,
see Mahindra & Renault jodi, not Renault has started its on business
after gaining fame. Slowly it will crush Mahindra. This is happening
because of our corrupt Govt who are giving full support and less tax
to all foreign companies. We are the only country which has all
seasons and all types of lands. India was, and is a self suficient
country, we have everything. We dont need anyones support to grow.
Proud to be Indian. BE INDIAN - BUY INDIAN.
Many are afraid of drinking COCO COLA AND PEPSI due its chemical content. Our Modern Food -makers of 77 died slow death on the invasion of these giants in Indian soil.
No one on this planet knows what causes cancer nor does anyone have a cure for cancer so why not be truthful an say everything you do, touch, eat and breathe may or may not cause cancer. Everything on this planet has the possibilty of causing cancer from the sun to soda so why waste your life worrying over every grand of sand in the world. I am a cancer survivor nine years now an if I wasted my time I am sure I could find someone to blame besides my ovaries or my cervics. You can make anything good or bad for you if you use enough words or the right words so stop wasting your time on trying to find someone to pin the tail on the cancer. Live life to the fulliest because cancer or not every stinking human being on this planet will die at some point so why not make the most of it before you go. Enjoy a soda or two it might be the last time you have a chance to, you nor statistics can predict the time someone will die, statistics aren't GOD!!!!!!
It is unfortunate we are still bothering and worrying about coke and pepsi multinational products gambling with the lives of every indian Are they not ashamed to say that they would like to reduce he potential carcinogens from those drinks it means all he while the dirty companies were poisoning and promoting cancers .Thso two drinks are fit only as TOILET CLEANERS AS MANY TRIALS AND STUDIES PROVED BEYOND DOUBT. In India the corrupt politicians promote the import of those worthless drinks and spend billions on promotion [like ads in TVs and media etc., It is hightime that Govt of Indai should completely BAN those two drinks and the companies fast food sectors like lays etc.,
What is the compulsion to drink these beverages? Want to support the Indian economy AND stay infinitely more healthy? Go drink a tender coconut!
If they are selling such products in US, god also can not save India. Indian government shall immediately ban selling of coca cola and pepsi and similar unhealthy soft drinks pending comprehensive investigation in this regard in India.
@ Dinesh, don't you think the world has moved far ahead for any "swadeshi" movement to be successful? Global economy is intrinsically interdependent and Indian economy is a part of it. To develop we have to grow along with so called developed countries. It is impossible to start any "swadeshi" movement and grow in an isolated manner.
It is amazing that a product that no one really needs, has no nutritional value (other than the 40 gms of sugar in the non-diet versions), costlier than a cup of tea and could potentially cause cancer, can sell so much and be considered as a "cool" drink by everyone.
I was an addict to pepsi drinks when I was in 20s, but have replaced soft drinks with carbonated lemon water these days. One or two pepsi/coke cans a week won't do much harm, but I see that habitual coke/pepsi drinkers are rarely healthy people!
Atleast a newspaper had the guts to bring it up in the frontpage. When will our standards body wake up. In india kids in mumbai are dying bcos of using toxic colors. Why do we value lives so cheap? Pls wake up. Ban the cola giants until they comply. May be they needs to pay for the past mistakes. Time for legal action
Yes, Dinesh, valid point, our people should know these facts about foreign goods, else we innocently consume without knowing what are the subtle health effects it has on us. And also these guys charge More than 10 rs per drink which is a slow paisa robbery. It should not cost more than 5 Rs anything beyond should go to
government.
What does it mean to India? Do we really care all these? or just help US corporates to earn more money? We need to give little bit room for thinking, we are continuously working like machines, and spending on buying Foreign goods, we need Swadeshi Act, not just movement. We can be patriotic people, but that should help us gain economically also.
In my childhood, my parents enforced strict rules on what to and not to consume. So, had not many options. When I can grew up, I came to know of their ill-effects through many studies and my friends' personal experience. After that, I took personal care to avoid these drinks as much as possible. For a long time, I have been using both Coke and Pepsi only to clean my toilets or when I had to go without brushing my teeth in the morning (not advisable due to the very high sugar >content). Personally, I'm NOT WILLING TO BE A MARTYR SO SOME FILTHY RICH CAN BECOME RICHER...
