Coimbatore Corporation’s revamped water supply seems to have benefited residents in only a few wards and that too for a short while.

The corporation had about a month ago - in mid March - announced that it had revamped water supply in such a way that it would supply water once in every six days but by reducing the duration of the supply.

Prior to this, the civic body was supplying water once in 12 - 20 days for longer duration.

But in the last month, since the introduction of the new supply cycle, the residents say the situation had turned worse. Former councillors and ruling party functionaries admitted that the residents’ anger had in fact increased after the new system was introduced.

Many tail-end areas in the distribution system in the ward do not get water at all as the water supplied is insufficient, says a former Councillor from near Ramanathapuram. In and around Ramanathapuram, Sowripalayam, Varadharajapuram and other areas, the Corporation slowly inched back to the old system by giving water once in eight days, then 10 days and now 12 days. In short, it is back to square one, the former Councillor adds.

In Selvapuram, the corporation supplies water only once in 15 days and that too it is contaminated, says resident T.V. Gopi. In Peelamedu, the residents say the Corporation supplies water only once in 10 days.

For residents near Flower Market, Sukhrawarpet and other areas, the corporation supplies water only once in 15 days.

Corporation officials admit that they had planned the once-in-six-day supply for residents in the old city area - 60 wards. But even to them, the civic body is unable to supply as planned. They claim that the corporation supplied water once a week to residents of 48 wards and once in 10 days for residents in other wards.

In added areas, residents in a few areas suffer more than the others, particularly in Kurichi. In added areas in the north, the additional supply of Pilloor water has helped things ease a bit.
