A 3-year-old girl was run over by her school van near her house in Ambur on Wednesday. The van had no helper to ensure that the children got off safely from the vehicle, the police said.

The victim, Raga Nisha was the second daughter of Ganapathy, a former councillor and Eswari. The family resides at Kalaikapuram village in Ambur taluk. She studied in a private school a few km away from her house. On Wednesday afternoon, the child was being dropped home in the school van. “As the vehicle had no helper, her father Ganapathy helped her get off. And then while he was helping another child alight the van, Nisha ran to the front of the vehicle,” said a police officer.

The driver did not see the child standing in front of the van and started moving. She was crushed under the wheels and died on the spot. The van driver, Surya, fled the place immediately.

The police registered a case and are investigating.
