Erratic supply of drinking water has forced residents of Kumalankuttai to collect water from damaged pipelines here.
Over 500 houses were located in the area and they depend on the corporation’s drinking water.
Many residents said that they were not receiving water regularly and were forced to depend on other sources.
“Water is distributed through common pipelines occasionally,” said Alamu. She said that they are drawing water from pits that were developed due to water leakage from the main pipelines for many months now.
As we belong to low-income level group, purchasing water is not affordable to us, she added. Since small leakages in the pipelines cannot be repaired immediately, water from it serves as a source for the residents in the area. As the leakage is not attended for months, residents make a pit in which the leaked water gets stored. Later, they draw the water from it regularly.
Residents said that with summer setting it, they need a long term solution for their water woes so that they can consume protected drinking water. Sometimes, dust and waste materials settle in the pit and we draw the contaminated water from it, they added. Residents wanted the civic body to supply water regularly in pipelines or through lorries so that the issue is sorted out.
