Two siblings – aged five and four years – fell into a farm well near Melpatti on Monday. They fell into the well while playing near it and later died in the hospital.

According to the police, Senthil Kumar, 40, a resident of Melpennathur, in his complaint, stated that he had taken a land in Kolakottai in Melpatti on lease and was raising crops for 10 years.

At 8.30 a.m. on Monday, his wife Sumithra, 28, had taken their children Manish Kumar, 5, and Lakshmitha, 4, to the farm to water the standing crop of maize. The children were playing near the farm well when Sumithra saw them fall into it.

She called for help and jumped into the well to rescue the children. Farmers from neighbouring fields rushed to their help and rescued the trio. However, the children were in a critical condition and were rushed to the Government Hospital at Gudiyatham. They died at the hospital. Sumithra was admitted to a hospital and is out of danger, police said.
