Water level in the Sathanur Dam crossed the 100 feet-mark on Friday night. As on Sunday, the water level was 100.15 feet as against its total height of 119 feet. Water will be released from the dam for five days from Monday to cater to the drinking water needs.

Surplus water from the Krishnagiri Reservoir Project (KRP) dam was released from September 2, following which Sathanur Dam started to receive water. From 75.35 feet on September 3, the water level has increased by 24.8 feet now.

Its present storage capacity is 3,776 mcft as against its total capacity of 7,321 mcft. The inflow from KRP dam was initially 3,700 cusecs. However, the inflow reduced gradually and currently, it is receiving 173 cusecs of water.

An official release from the district administration said water from the dam will be released for drinking water purposes from September 25 to 30.

The water will be released to recharge the wells located near Thenpennai river, Villupuram under the combined drinking water scheme. Starting Monday, 750 cusecs of water will be released for five days. Each day, 64.8 mcft of water will be released from the dam into Thenpennai river — a total of 324 mcft for all five days, District Collector K. S. Kandasamy said in the release.

He urged people to stay away from venturing into the river or trying to cross it during this period.
