The State government has allotted Rs. 12 crore for giving educational assistance to students belonging to the minority communities for the year 2009-10, chairman of the Minorities Welfare Commission Rev. Fr. Vincent Chinnadurai said in Thanjavur on Thursday.

He told presspersons that out of this amount, Rs. 10 crore would be given to 1,06,340 school students and Rs. 2 crore to 26,845 college students. Last year, Rs. 3.7 crore was given to 24,125 school students and Rs. 1.96 crore to 6693 college students. In Thanjavur district, 1,904 school students and 1,130 college students would benefit by the allotment this year.

Earlier, he held discussions with District Collector M. S. Shanmugham, District Revenue Officer M. Karunakaran and representatives of minority organisations and educational institutions. They demanded an increase in the allotment of funds and reservation for the minority communities. They also urged him to apprise the government of their demand.
