Several organisations, including the Confederation of Voluntary Associations (COVA), have called for restrained celebrations during Milad-un-Nabi, the birth anniversary of the Prophet of Islam that falls on Friday this year.
They have urged the faithful, the youth in particular, to spurn ostentatious and un-Islamic ways.
“Taking out noisy rallies on two wheelers, use of loud speakers late at night and slogan-shouting are against the teachings of Islam and also lead to disturbance of public peace,” said Mazher Hussain, director, COVA, Muneeruddin Mujahid, social activist and president, Tahreek Khair Ummat and Syed Shah Falullah Quadri Al Moosavi, mutawalli, Dargah Syed Shah Moosa Quadri.
They told presspersons that the renowned Islamic seminary, Jamia Nizamia, had issued a ‘fatwa’ (religious edict) prohibiting use of loud speakers and wasteful decoration, use of unauthorised electricity and singing and dancing.
“It is the responsibility of elders to counsel misguided youth,” Mr. Hussain added.
