Rallies, and meetings marked the May Day celebrations in the district here on Monday.

Members of various trade unions affiliated to AITUC and CITU took out a rally from Kottai to Bose Maidan in the evening. They raised slogans calling for protecting the work force and also giving priority to the welfare of the workers. Participants carried placards that called for protecting the rights of all workers. They also distributed pamphlets to the public that called for joint coordination in ensuring protection of their rights.

Earlier, in the day trade union leaders hoisted flags at transport offices and various parts of the district and distributed sweets to the public. They called for coordinated struggle against privitisation of Salem Steel Plant by the Union Government and also blamed the governments for failing to address the labour issues.
