Chief Minister V.Narayanasamy said that student yoga enthusiasts who have won awards in state, national and world yoga competitions will be given priority in education.
Speaking at the 3rd International Yoga Day held on beach promenade here on Wednesday, he said that the details will be discussed in the Cabinet and announced later. Students will be also felicitated, he added.
“School teachers will be trained in yoga and they would be encouraged to teach yoga in schools,” he said.
Mr. Narayanasamy said that the reason he has been able to work for 12 hours in a day even at the age of 70 is because of practising yoga.
Addressing thousands of students gathered at the promenade beach, Minister of State for External Affairs, M.J. Akbar, who was the chief guest for the event, said when Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the idea to celebrate yoga three years ago, lot of people were sceptical.
“Now, it has become a movement across the world led by the philosophical history of the country,” he said.
He added that people think yoga belongs to the past but it belongs to the future as well. “This is the age of gym and people go to the gym to improve strength. It can only give external strength. But, yoga gives internal strength, peace and harmony,” he said.
Mr. Akbar underlined that India has given yoga to the world and the world has adopted it.
Nearly 2,200 schoolchildren and 300 college students participated in the yoga festival. The Chief Minister and senior government officials performed various asanas for over an hour.
