The proportion of women in the Puducherry police force has been on the rise in the last two years, Inspector General of Police Praveer Ranjan said here on Wednesday.

Addressing the newly recruited home guards after the ceremonial march past at the police grounds in Gorimedu here, he said that the proportion of women in the police force was low two years ago as there were not too many applicants for various posts.

Eligibility criteria

However, the Government lowered the eligibility criteria so that more number of women could join the force. The Puducherry Police Department has now a fairly good representation of women, which is as per the directions of the Union Home Ministry.

The Government was also ready to sanction additional strength and around 1,400 police personnel including 214 constables from the India Reserve Battalion and 100 women constables were recruited during the last two years.

The Union Territory has one of the youngest police force in the country and the recruits should keep up the ideals and ensure that we are the best force in the country, he added.

The police department is also trying to maintain a fairly good representation of applicants from all the enclaves of Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam in the force.

A total of 355 home guard recruits including 36 from Karaikal, 14 from Mahe and 24 from Yanam passed out successfully on Wednesday after completing training.

He expressed hope that most of the home guard recruits will be able to get into the Puducherry police in the coming years. Policing is a highly skilled job and the recruits should take pride in wearing the uniform.
