Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Sunday said he would inform the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) about the concerns expressed by different sections of people on the power tariff hike.

Addressing a press conference here, he said the government had objected to the power hike when the proposal was made by the JERC. He said the regulatory commission was of the opinion that the Electricity Department suffered a loss because of low tariff structure.

The department incurred an expenditure of ₹1,200 crore annually towards power purchase but the power tariff collection stood at ₹1,000 crore. “We will hold a meeting with JERC to find a way out,” he said.

‘Will join DMK rally’

The Chief Minister said he along with the Minister for Public Works A. Namassivayam would participate in the padayatra taken out by DMK working president M.K. Stalin on the Cauvery issue when it enters Karaikal region on April 11.

The building for Karaikal campus of the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research would be ready for commissioning next year. The infrastructure for the campus was coming up at Karaikal at a cost of ₹400 crore, the Chief Minister said.

Complimenting the police for cracking the sensational murder of a pawn broker, he said the incident occurred during the previous N.R. Congress regime. The police could not make a breakthrough due to political interference. Immediately after the Congress came to power, the government ordered a thorough probe into the case, he said.
