Inmates of the St. Joseph of Cluny Hospice Home for the Aged had an unexpected guest on Friday. As many as 125 inmates were in for a pleasant surprise when they saw Lieutenant Governor A.K. Singh walking into the premises.

Mr. Singh distributed fruits and sweet packets to the inmates.

He said that he wanted to meet the inmates and seek their blessings not only for his family but the people of Puducherry. The government was extending full support to the charity mission.

Mr. Singh later told reporters that he had requested Chief Minister N. Rangasamy to take the parade in Puducherry on his behalf on Republic Day as he had to be in Andamans being Lieutenant Governor there too.

“I will take a flight from the Andamans to be here for the ‘At Home’ held in the evening in connection with the Republic Day celebrations,” he said.

Mother Superior Sister Teresa said most inmates of the Home had either been abandoned by their children or picked up from the streets and railway stations.

A few inmates were terminally ill and disabled. Medicines, food and accommodation are all provided free of cost. The expenditure is being borne by various philanthropists, she said.
