A 14-year-old girl studying in a government school was fatally knocked down by a private school van at Arasakuli near Virudhachalam on Friday.

The name of the girl was given as K. Kavya alias Sivaranjini of Kolapakkam near Virudhachalam.

Police said Kavya along with her friends Nandini (14), Kaamini (12) and Sowmya (17) were waiting at the Arasakuli bus stop when the speeding van of a private school bound for Neyveli from Virudhachalam hit them.

While Kavya died on the spot, the trio sustained injuries and were admitted to the Virudhachalam Government Hospital. The van driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.

Tension prevailed at the accident spot as relatives of the victim along with locals resorted to a road blockade on the Cuddalore-Virudhachalam Road condemning the police for their failure to check rash driving.
