Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Wednesday said his government is trying to get 25% quota in deemed universities as State quota to compensate for the loss of seats to local students after the Directorate of Health Sciences, New Delhi, took control of the undergraduate medical admissions.
He told reporters here that before the Supreme Court order transferring control over admission in deemed universities to the directorate, the government used to get 137 seats as its quota.
After the court ruling, the territorial administration had lost these seats. The self-financing and minority institutions too had to surrender 15% of the seats as all-India quota.
“This will deprive local students a chance to get admission in private medical institutions. So we have asked the Union Government to provide 25% quota in four deemed universities,” he said. The government has decided to set aside 22 seats meant for NRI students to local candidates in IGMCRI.
