UMP wins 2 seats in French polls

Siva Predibane and Kanaga Selvam-Govindassamy of Union Movement Populaire (UMP) and Vilchat Balaramin of Solidarte Pour le Progrès won the three seats of the Consular Councillors election held for French citizens in the Puducherry region on Sunday.

From a total of 4785 registered voters, 2476 people voted, according to the French consulate.

The UMP got 760 votes and the Solidarte Pour le Progrès got 670 votes.

There were 54 invalid votes.

The Droit des Expatries Francais en Inde (DEFI), which contested the elections, has in a press statement, alleged irregularities in the candidature and election and has requested the election be considered void.

When asked to comment, the French Consulate said that no complaint was officially lodged with the consulate and therefore, it cannot comment on the statement.
