Volunteers of the Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) laid a siege to the toll gate operated by the National Highways Authority of India at Moratandi near here on Saturday, disrupting vehicular movement briefly. The activists led by Puducherry unit secretary of the party Sridhar marched to the toll plaza in the morning.

The protesters claimed that though the public paid road tax while buying new vehicles they were fleeced by exorbitant and unjustified tolls at all toll gates.

They alleged that the government was helping the private operators exploit the public.

The territorial administration should urge the Centre to withdraw the collection of toll at all highways, they added. The police later removed the protesters from the site.
