Investigations into the murder of a sixty-five-year-old woman in Kurumbapet eight days ago and looting of valuables from her house led the police to two persons, one of whom was a B. Tech graduate and the other held an M. Sc. zoology degree.
Their accomplice though had a profile more in keeping with regular criminals — a fifth standard pass.
The main accused in this case, N. Silambarasan, (25), a native of Mambakkam near Ulundurpet, had completed B. Tech in a reputed educational institute and was working in a call centre in Puducherry. He allegedly hatched a plan, along with two accomplices, to murder Prema, the elderly woman who had rented a room to one of them.
According to police, the daylight robbery and murder was committed on June 6 at a house in the Housing Board Quarters in Kurumbapet.
The incident came to light when the woman’s son Bhubesh and his wife Ramya, called on Prema later in the day.
They found the grill gate and main door left open. Prema was found lying dead with her hands and arms tied and mouth gagged.
Her gold jewellery worth about 12 gold sovereigns, a laptop and mobile phone were stolen.
A case was registered at the Mettupalayam Police Station and investigations launched.
Investigation teamOn the direction of the Director General of Police P. Kamaraj and other officials including the Senior Superintendent of Police, Omvir Singh, an investigation team was formed comprising Circle Inspectors R. Ragunayagam of D’ Nagar and S. Nagaraj of Mettupalayam.
Working on the clue given by one witnesses, the police concluded that the tenant Silambarasan was present at the scene of crime.
On interrogation, Silambarasan confessed that he and his friends — P. Prasad (27) and S. Vengadesh of Kumbakonam — had entered the house posing as rental accommodation seekers and strangulated the woman and stolen her jewellery and a few electrical gadgets.
Stolen property seized“Silambarasan was the first to be arrested. Following his confession, the other accused persons Prasad and Vengadesh were arrested in Kumbakonam on the same day. The stolen properties were seized. The total worth of seized items is about Rs.4.lakh,” said Mr. Omvir Singh.
