The traffic police have introduced regulations on vehicular movement along some routes in connection with the procession for the immersion of idols as part of Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations on Tuesday. The procession is due to commence at 1.30 p.m. from Avvai Thidal at Saram and reach the Old Port via Kamaraj Salai, J.N. Street, M.G. Road, S.V. Patel Salai and Beach Road.
The procession of idols heading from the northern and southern sides of the city will converge at Pattanikadai Junction, the police said. Traffic is being regulated as a temporary measure, Veera Balakrishnan, Superintendent of Police (Traffic-North and East), said.
All four-wheelers and three-wheelers (heavy vehicles including school and college buses) are barred from the stretch of Kamaraj Salai from Avvai Thidal to Pattanikadi Junction from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Similar restrictions will be in force on the stretch of Anna Salai from Anna Square to Ajantha Junction for the same duration.
All town and route bus services will be operated along the ECR and avoid plying through Ajantha Junction and S.V. Patel Salai between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., Mr. Balakrishnan added.
