Tourist arrival in Puducherry grows by 11 per cent

Stating that tourist arrival in Puducherry had witnessed a growth of 11 per cent, Lieutenant Governor A.K. Singh said that tourism is emerging as the ‘largest service industry for generating employment and spurring economic growth’ in his customary address on the first day of the budget session of the Puducherry Assembly on Wednesday.

With regard to completed projects, Mr. Singh mentioned the toilet block and changing rooms constructed around Nalankulam at Thirunallar, Karaikal under the Temple Town Development Project at a cost of Rs3.5 crore.

He added that the Northern Ring Road at Thirunallar was completed at a cost of Rs 9.34 crore, and the Nallambal lake was developed as a tourist destination at a cost of Rs4.98 crore under this project.

Further, the Heritage Precinct in Mahe was developed at a cost of Rs1.83 crore. Financial assistance has been extended to various NGOS and educational institutions for cultural events in a bid to develop tourism, he said.

The Union Territory has also been participating in tourism and trade fairs held in many cities in India.
