In an effort aimed at nurturing entrepreneurship among students, the Entrepreneurship Development cell attached to the Department of Industries and Commerce has asked all arts and science colleges, and polytechnics to identify prospective entrepreneurs in their respective technical domains.

As a first step, an orientation programme for selected faculty from government arts and science colleges, and polytechnics was recently organised in collaboration with the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education. The lecturers were sensitised to the importance of tapping young talent so as to promote entrepreneurial spirit in students.

Over 40 faculty members from various colleges participated in the orientation programme. The orientation will help the principals to realise the concept of EC or projects suited for the students in their respective colleges.

Vishnupriya, Regional Manager at National Entrepreneurship Netwwork (NEN) of the Wadhwani Foundation stressed the importance of nurturing entrepreneurship skills in students.

Wadhwani Foundation has worked closely with the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of the Government of Tamil Nadu, in the effective implementation of the Learn Wise (experiential learning) programme across the State.

“The thrust at National Entrepreneurship Network is to support institute members to go to the next level and become entrepreneurial leaders in the region. Puducherry is a newly evolving region in this space and the government hopes to develop entrepreneurship, capacity building, across the region. Since it is a Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC)-based blended facilitated model, effective implementation across the region is possible,” Prof. S. Ramkumar, Chairman of ED cell told The Hindu .

Govt. planning projects

The Directorate of Higher and Technical Education and ED cell, along with NEN will provide an ecosystem that favours the growth of entrepreneurship in colleges. The government is planning other promotion projects that will encourage youth and college students to become entrepreneurs. The idea is to turn Puducherry into an entrepreneurial region with more job providers than job seekers, he said.
