‘Don’t spit on the roads. Tuberculosis spreads through the air,” read the message in bold print in the pamphlets handed out by a team of volunteers in Puducherry.
They were fans of actor Suriya, who were following their screen idol’s footsteps in creating awareness on tuberculosis, a week after World Tuberculosis Day observed on March 24.
The south Indian actor has been leading a campaign against the disease this month. The Ariyankuppam Kalvi Nayagan Suriya Narpani Iyakkam joined hands with Resource Group for Education and Advocacy for Community Health (Reach) to spread the word that TB is treatable.
The team distributed pamphlets at public spots and houses in Ariyankuppam, said K. Suriya Prithiviraj, president of the association.
Symptoms of the disease, treatment available were all listed.
The team of volunteers also screened a short film about the disease in four vantage points around the area.
Character artist B.N. Raja kicked off the campaign at Brahman statue in Ariyankuppam.
