Government high school students stage a protest near Thirukkanur on Wednesday.

Over 500 students of Annai Saradha Devi Government High School, Vadhanur, on Wednesday blocked traffic protesting shortage of teachers .

Even though the are reportedly facing difficulties, including shortage of teachers and infrastructure, the school has been achieving 100 per cent results in Standard X examinations for the past four years.

On Wednesday, parents and students blocked the road between Thirukkanur and Sellipattu in front of the school urging the authorities to implement their demands.

A. Selvam, a parent, said that the school lacked even a proper compound wall. As a result, antisocial elements freely move around the area causing fear among students.

Another parent complained that there was no proper distribution of noon meal and that the drinking water provided was of poor quality.

“Even though we submitted representations to the authorities, there has been no response,” the parent alleged.

Deputy Speaker in Assembly T.P.R. Selvame visited the spot and assured the protestors that their demands would be met, following which they dispersed.
