A large number of students from Government schools along with activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI) on Friday attempted to picket the Legislative Assembly.

They wanted to mark their protest against the indifferent attitude of the Education department in meeting the basic requirements of schools including timely distribution of free uniforms and textbooks.

Rally

The students led by A. Anand, secretary of the Puducherry unit of SFI earlier took out a huge rally from the Directorate of School Education on the 100-feet road.

However, the protestors were blocked enroute by the police near the Head post office.

The students staged a dharna and raised slogans against the Government for neglecting the education sector.

Mr. Anand said the Puducherry Government had failed to ensure proper distribution of textbooks and uniforms to students of government schools, a month after schools had reopened.

Uniform allowance

They also demanded enhancement of the allowance for uniforms from Rs. 250 to Rs. 450. Vacant posts of teachers in several schools were not filled and the government’s indifferent attitude only affected the student community, he said.
