The normal banking operations such as cash withdrawals, cheque clearances and deposits in public sector banks were badly affected as employees began a two-day strike on Monday.

They were demanding wage revision. Branches of most of the banks looked deserted in the absence of employees and customers. Similarly, cash withdrawals through Automated Teller Machines (ATM) were also affected in many locations. However, private sector banks such as ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank were functioning as usual.

The impact of strike was felt in most of the 160 public sector bank branches in Puducherry.

A report said that as many as 3000 employees took part. A large number of employees participated in the demonstration held near UCO bank here.

In Cuddalore, Villupuram

The entire banking operations in Cuddalore and Villupuram district got paralysed on Monday owing to the two-day strike call given by the United Forum of Bank Unions.

Most of the ATMs that were last replenished on Saturday ran out of cash. In effect, the banks, including the private ones have been rendered inoperative for three and half days, as the strike follows the weekend, causing a crisis in business transactions and fund flow.

The members of the Forum led by S. Sridharan, general secretary of the All India Bank Employees’ Association staged a demonstration in front of UCO Bank here on Monday. Forum coordinator P.K.V. Ramani, All India Bank Officers’ Association secretary M. Kannan, Association district president N. Murugesan participated.
