Banking services ground to a virtual halt in the city due to the strike called by banking unions pressing for various demands, including wage revision. Bankers in the city were part of an estimated 70,000 employees in various public and private banks in Tamil Nadu and Puduchery who took part in the strike called by the umbrella organisation United Forum of Banking Unions. Banking transactions including withdrawal of cash, cheque clearances and cash deposits and ATM services were badly hit.
